Accessibility

Atlántis is built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. That was a design decision from the first page rather than a retrofit, and it is checked as each page is built.

What is in place

• Text and background colour combinations are measured against WCAG contrast ratios. Body text is well above the minimum.
• Body text is never smaller than 16 pixels, and story text is set at 19 pixels. Nothing on the site renders below 14 pixels.
• Every interactive element can be reached and used with a keyboard, and the focus outline is always visible. It is never removed.
• Every meaningful image carries a text description. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
• Pages use real headings, landmarks and lists, so the structure makes sense when read aloud.
• Animation is limited, and if your device is set to reduce motion, it stops.
• Pages reflow to a 320 pixel screen and to 200 per cent zoom without horizontal scrolling.
• There is a skip link to the main content at the top of every page.

Travelling without a car, and step-free access

Accessibility on this site is not only about the web pages. Because these journeys are made without a car, each story records how the place was actually reached, how far the walking was, and where the ground was difficult. That information is written for anyone pushing a pushchair, using a wheelchair, moving slowly, or travelling without a car, and it is the information most often missing from a destination's own pages.

We describe conditions as we found them on the day. We are not a certified accessibility assessor, and surfaces, ramps and transport change. Please check with the place itself before relying on it.

Your data

The short version: this site sets no cookies, runs no analytics, shows no advertising and tracks nobody. What follows is the full account, written to meet the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and Danish data protection law.

What we collect when you simply read

Nothing that identifies you. This site is static. It sets no cookies of any kind — not analytics, not advertising, not preference cookies — and stores nothing in your browser. There is no tracking pixel, no session identifier and no fingerprinting. Because we set no cookies, no consent banner is required under the Danish Cookie Order or the ePrivacy Directive.

What our hosting provider records

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. As part of delivering and protecting any website, Cloudflare processes technical connection data, including your IP address, the time of your request, the page requested and your browser type. This happens at the network level, we do not use it for analytics, and we do not build profiles from it.

• Purpose: delivering the site and protecting it against attack and abuse.
• Legal basis: our legitimate interest in operating a secure website, Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.
• Processor: Cloudflare, Inc., a company established in the United States, engaged under a data processing agreement incorporating the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
• Retention: Cloudflare retains such logs for a short period under its own policy; we do not receive or store them.

Fonts

This site currently loads its typefaces from Google Fonts. That means your browser makes a request to servers operated by Google, and your IP address is transmitted to Google in the process. We do not receive that data and we use it for nothing, but you should know it happens, because it is a transfer to a third party.

The newsletter

The signup form on this site is not yet connected to a mailing provider and collects nothing. Submitting it stores no data and sends no email. When the newsletter goes live, this section will be updated before a single address is collected, and it will state:

• What we collect: your email address, and nothing else. No name is required.
• Purpose: sending you new stories. Nothing else, ever.
• Legal basis: your consent, Article 6(1)(a) GDPR, given by a positive action. Consent can be withdrawn at any time without affecting the lawfulness of what came before. Under section 10 of the Danish Marketing Practices Act we will not send marketing email without your prior consent.
• Retention: until you unsubscribe, after which your address is deleted rather than suppressed, unless we are legally obliged to keep a record of your objection.
• Processor: the email provider will be named here, along with where it stores data and, if outside the EEA, the transfer safeguard relied on.

We never sell, rent, share or trade your details, and we do not use them for profiling or automated decision-making.

Enquiries you send us

If you write to us, we keep your message and address for as long as needed to deal with the matter and for a reasonable period afterwards, on the basis of our legitimate interest in answering correspondence, Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect any data from them. Where consent is the basis for an information society service, Denmark sets the age at 13.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

• ask whether we hold data about you, and receive a copy of it (Article 15);
• have inaccurate data corrected (Article 16);
• have your data erased (Article 17);
• have processing restricted (Article 18);
• receive your data in a portable, machine-readable form (Article 20);
• object to processing based on legitimate interests (Article 21);
• withdraw consent at any time (Article 7(3));
• not be subject to automated decision-making, which we do not carry out (Article 22).

Write to the address above and we will respond within one month, as the Regulation requires. Exercising these rights is free.

Security and changes

The site is served only over an encrypted connection, with a content security policy and strict transport security in force. We hold no database of visitors. If this policy changes we will update it here and change the review date at the foot of the page; if a change materially affects people who have given us consent, we will tell them directly.

Editorial independence

Nothing on Atlántis is sponsored. Every maker, shop, museum, ferry, guesthouse and meal that appears in a story was found, chosen and paid for by us. Nobody has bought a place in a story, and nobody can.

We take no commission and use no affiliate links. If we recommend somewhere, there is no financial reason for it.

The people in our stories

These journeys depend on people. The person who explained where the bus actually stops, the host who found a cot, the driver who waited. They are the reason the stories exist, and they did not set out to become content.

• Anyone recognisable in a photograph or named in a story is asked first, and told where it will appear.
• Anyone can ask to be removed at any time, without giving a reason, and we will take it down.
• We do not publish personal contact details for the individuals who help us. Where a business is happy to be found, we name the business.
• We do not photograph people's homes or private spaces without permission. A place someone lives is not a backdrop.
• No children are identifiable in anything we publish.
